What Is a Dental Bridge?

Dental Bridge

Just like the name indicates, a dental bridge bridges the gap between one or more missing teeth. This type of dental surgery typically yields two crowns, one on each tooth on either side of the gap, and a false tooth placed in between. The anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth. The false tooth may be crafted from alloy, gold, porcelain, or any combination of these materials. Dental implants or natural teeth are used to support dental bridges.

As any experienced dental surgeon will tell you, this type of cosmetic dentistry offers a number of benefits, including the following:

  • It can restore and improve your smile.
  • It can restore your ability to speak and chew properly.
  • It will maintain the shape of your facial structure.
  • It prevents your remaining teeth from drifting out of proper alignment.
  • It properly redistributes the forces of your bite by replacing the missing tooth.

There are three primary types of dental bridges. The first is Maryland bonded bridge, which is crafted from plastic gums and teeth that are supported by a metal framework. The second option is Cantilever bridges, which are frequently used to replace a single missing tooth. The final type is the traditional bridge. Each type of bridge offers its own set of benefits. During your initial consultation with a dental surgeon, he or she will discuss your options with you and determine which one best suits your unique needs.
