What Can Cause Sensitive Teeth?

Sensitive teeth hurt when they get into contact with cold things like ice cream or something hot like coffee. Tooth sensitivity is a common problem that sometimes becomes a hindrance to the person. Here are some of the factors that can make your teeth sensitive.

Gum Recession

Gum recession is a condition that begins as an inflammation of the gum. The gum may then begin bleeding and become sensitive to some food products. The root of the tooth becomes exposed further worsening the condition. The treatment of this condition includes using desensitizing toothpaste and softened toothbrush. Improving your oral hygiene can also help in treating the condition.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is the slow breakdown of enamel and dentin caused by acidic bacteria. This acid eats away the enamel exposing the sensitive parts of the tooth. Improving your oral hygiene regimen can prevent tooth decay and sensitivity. This condition can be corrected by application of a sealant solution or filling when the enamel is considerably destroyed.

Whitening Treatments

You can get teeth whitening treatments from your dentist or drug stores. These treatments help in removing stains giving back your smile. However, the presence of harsh chemicals in these products sometimes ends up removing the enamel making your teeth sensitive. Using whitening products in moderation and/or switching to different types can help in reducing their adverse effects. Sometimes, you may have to stop using them altogether.

Grinding

Although grinding your teeth may look like a harmless activity, it may cause enough stress to wear down enamel over time. This may end up exposing your teeth tissues making them sensitive to hot or cold things. A custom-fitted mouth guard can help in addressing grinding especially if it happens when you are sleeping.

Hard Brushing

Although brushing your teeth is essential in improving your oral hygiene, sometimes it may cause sensitivity on using too much force. Besides, brushing may become dangerous when you use a hard-bristled toothbrush. These two conditions can cause the wearing down of enamel making your teeth sensitive. Being gentler when brushing and using a toothbrush with softer bristles can keep your enamel intact and prevent tooth sensitivity.
