How Often Should I Replace My Toothbrush?

If you can see your toes poke through your socks, it is time to get a new pair. When the milk jug is empty, you might want to grab another one.

The right time for a toothbrush replacement is not always so easy to know. Check out the following to learn the best time to find a new brush.

When to Replace Your Toothbrush

Most experts agree that under normal circumstances, a toothbrush is best in the first three months. After three or at most four months, you will not get the best out of your toothbrush.

Young children tend to get excited and use too much pressure. You will need to replace theirs more often.

If you have been sick recently, consider throwing out your brush.

Why Replace Your Toothbrush

When the bristles on your brush begin to fray and bend, they will not provide the cleaning you need to have a clean mouth.

There are also little problems on your toothbrush. Your toothbrush can be home to millions of microscopic bacteria or germs. When your toothbrush dries, most of these little critters are not a problem. But, if you live with anyone else, their bacteria may get onto your toothbrush causing you to get sick.

How to Maintain Your Toothbrush to Extend its Life

There are some steps you can take to keep your toothbrush up to the task of keeping your mouth clean. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends for you to rinse off your toothbrush after brushing.

Make sure to leave your toothbrush in an upright position to help it dry out. Avoid capping your toothbrush. An enclosed space allows for bacteria to grow unrestrained. If you plan to travel, try to use a disposable toothbrush.
