How Can a Dentist Repair a Chipped Tooth?

If you’ve chipped a tooth, it’s important to get it fixed as soon as possible so it doesn’t result in further issues. A chipped tooth can both cause pain and make you insecure about your smile.

Bonding

If the chip is minor, a simple bonding may be the answer. A bonding involves molding composite material over the healthy part of the tooth, creating an even appearance and correcting the chip. The composite is then set with a blue light that hardens the material and makes it strong and durable. When properly cared for, bondings can last up to 10 years.

Veneers

For more serious chips, your dentist may suggest veneers, which are porcelain composites that cover the front of the teeth. When applied and finished, their appearance is smooth and natural. Veneers can last anywhere from 10-20 years.

Crowns

Similar to veneers, crowns also are porcelain covers for teeth, but dental crowns cover the entire tooth, not just the front. Crowns are best suited when a large portion of the tooth falls off due to a crack. Crowns can quickly repair the shape of the tooth and prevent further damage.

Dental Implants

If the tooth is chipped right at the gumline, the dentist likely will recommend that it be removed and replaced with a dental implant.

If you have a chipped tooth, take care of the problem as soon as possible and contact the team at Southfield Family Dental today.
